How to Designate a SAP

Here’s the step-by-step process for designating your SAP in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse:

1. Log in to your Clearinghouse account

  • Go to https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov.

  • Sign in using your login.gov credentials.

2. Access the "My Dashboard" section

  • Once logged in, select "Driver" from your role options (if you have multiple roles).

3. Locate the “Designate Your SAP” option

  • On your dashboard, you’ll see a “Violation” listed if you have a drug/alcohol violation that requires a SAP process.

  • Next to the violation, there will be an option to “Enter SAP Information” or “Designate SAP.”

4. Enter your SAP’s information

  • You’ll need your SAP’s first and last name and Clearinghouse ID number (the SAP will provide this).

  • Double-check spelling and ID number — if it’s incorrect, the system won’t link them.
  • TO FIND MS. DANIELS -- TYPE "DANIELS" SHE WILL APPEAR AS "Bennett-Daniels, LCSW-QS, CCTP-V"

5. Submit your designation

  • Once you submit, your SAP will be notified in their Clearinghouse account and can accept the designation.

6. Your SAP completes their part

  • After you’ve designated them, your SAP will enter assessment and follow-up plan information directly into the Clearinghouse once your process is complete.

💡 Important Tips:

  • You must designate a SAP before they can update your status in the Clearinghouse.

  • Only SAPs who are registered in the Clearinghouse can be designated.

  • If you don’t know your SAP’s ID, ask them — it’s the easiest way to avoid errors.
